I have played around with magnetic tape for years and the slight hint of heat will distort the tape and ofcourse the sound quality. The Perfectone tape recorder was notorious for stretching tape as its capstan motor was directly underneath the recording head and in warm climates the heat generated actually warped the tape. In the 1980's they changed the tape polymer mix and heat was not a problem. Zonal was one of the best tapes for longevity. I tie my plants up in my garden with magnetic tape and found that Zonal was the strongest. To test tapes for quality and robustness, pull a length of tape and a quality tape should roll itself into itself as it stretches and looks like string or thread and you can actually sew your sox with it. Immensely strong stuff. </div><div id="AppleMailSignature"><br></div><div id="AppleMailSignature">Btw. Telefunken brought out the first tape recorder in 1938. It used paper tape coated in rust and gave superb recordings. The problem was when 'spooling' it broke so they brought out polymer based tape in the late 1940's to withstand high speed spooling but paper tape gave better recordings as it did not distort. In 1990 they-perfected multi gauge tapes for video and sound recording, then the whole world went digital spinning the recording heads fast (33 ips) and running the tape slow. Then solid state came in and everything became defunct. I much prefer Logmar's design whereby they embedded an internal 24 bit<br>
digital recorder into their high end Super 8 camera. Mine has the<br>
custom 5 pin stereo XLR connector. Their firmware will indicate<br>
start/stops regarding the digital audio recorder. The Logmar camera<br>
motor is crystal and accurate to 0.001 fps I believe. But it is not a<br>
quiet camera.<br>
